There are many ways to decorate a plain mirror, including just simply framing it. Mirrors are not only functional but they're also a great decorating tool if strategically placed in your home. The question then becomes how to make your mirror look less like a decorating tool and more like a piece of art.
Art is typically framed, so why not frame your mirror? A frame dresses up the edges of a mirror without affecting or significantly reducing its reflective surface. The variety of frames to choose from is virtually endless, from plain unfinished wood to fancy scrollwork frames stained or painted in almost any color. If you want something a little more personal, try decorating the frame yourself. Get a fairly simple frame with an unfinished surface and let your imagination loose. Do you want to try a faux finish to make the frame look rusted or antiqued? Go for it! If you're feeling a little more creative, try stencilling the frame with colors and motifs that match your already existing decor. Woodburning a frame is another great idea, provided you have the right tools and some time. Pick a pattern and draw it onto the frame. Then burn the pattern and either stain the frame or paint it using water based craft paint. Don't forget to glaze it when the paint is dry to give it a bit of shine! For those of you who are artistically inclined, try painting the frame free-hand using images that you enjoy. My favorite is to paint some delicate intertwined flowers or leaves on a thick wood frame. If simpler is better, try staining a frame to match or complement the other woodwork in your home. The frame doesn't have to be fancy to be a great addition to your home decor. Hopefully you're inspired now to decorate that mirror that just needs a little something to look perfect. Plan out your project beforehand and have fun with it. Your mirror will not only look great surrounded by a gorgeous frame, you'll feel great at what you've accomplished!
