Making Your Guests Feel At Home - Decorating For Winter Entertaining

Stephanie Smith

Winter decorating doesn't have to be all about Christmas. There are many other winter decorating ideas that you can take advantage of before and after the holiday season to make your home cozy and inviting, many of which don't require much effort or money.

Something as simple as putting some extra slippers in a basket by the front door lets your guests know that their comfort is important to you. Invite them to grab a pair of slippers when they take their shoes off to keep their feet from getting cold. This is especially welcome when you'll be spending time in any areas without rugs or carpet. Even if your guests decline the offer of slippers, the basket full of them will still be an open invitation to comfort!

If you use area rugs to add warmth to your home, make sure they are thick and plush, perfect for burying your toes in. You don't need to go for huge rugs, but a small rug at the kitchen sink or in the washroom will be a little treat that won't go unnoticed. It will also help to add a splash of color to your home decor.

Another great way to make your guests feel comfortable is with candles. They not only provide soft and calming light, they also convey a feeling of warmth. Scented candles can help freshen up what may be an otherwise stale room. Just make sure not to have too many scented candles burning at the same time since that much aroma can be overwhelming and may aggravate allergies. If possible, try to purchase allergy-friendly scented candles.

If you're planning to serve hot beverages, use oversized mugs that are big enough to wrap your hands around. Let's face it, who can resist a large mug of steaming hot chocolate... first the sweet smell, then the warmth emanating through the mug to warm up cold hands... then the sweet payoff when the beverage is cool enough to drink.... Oh! And don't forget the marshmallows!

Now that we're all craving hot chocolate, it's time to think about what makes you feel comfortable and cozy in the winter, then see how you can incorporate that into your decorating. Your thoughtfulness will go a long way towards pampering your guests, and the added touches will liven up your decor.
